Luxury Namibia

So much has changed in Namibia! There are now some stunning places to attract the more (or very) discerning traveller whilst, not so long ago, it was something of a mission to unearth any kind of luxury in Namibia.
luxury Namibia The joy of Namibia is that one can “safari” in differing ways: drive oneself, flying from one remote, beautiful place to another, camping, staying at comfortable homely lodges or - the opposite end of the spectrum - luxurious, designer lodges with breathtaking scenery. African Explorations have three Namibia specialists who were born or worked extensively in the country, so are leaders in creating superb holidays to this gorgeous country.

For our purposes here let’s concentrate on “Luxury Namibia”! Namibia is huge, with a tiny population, and we’ll focus on one property as example.

Far out in the wilds of the northwest, Okahirongo Lodge in Kaokoland is very remote. Namibia safari holidays The majority of inhabitants in this area are Himba. Leading a peaceful nomadic existence raising goats and sheep, the women are statuesque and paint themselves in red ochre mud mixed with fat. The Himba are very traditional in both lifestyle and garb and one is encouraged to visit their scattered settlements.

Enjoying fabulous views, this superb lodge lies in the most beautiful surroundings of dry river beds meandering through red-gold sand dunes and swaying grasslands, all under a backdrop of purple and blue hillsides. Desert dwelling elephant, rhino and occasional lion live in the harsh, yet malaria-free, environment of Purros Conservancy where Okahirongo is located.  The desert-adapted wildlife is certainly a reason to visit although sightings are to be treasured here, not expected.

Okahirongo perches on the side of a mountain and dominates an immense, almost endless, view of plains and dunes all of which can be admired from any of the eight luxury rooms. Surrounded by a traditional Himba boma, the rooms have both indoor and outdoor showers and are fully ensuite. Each room has a private sala, perfect for afternoon siestas or in which to sleep out, perhaps under a full moon, with the stars twinkling through the pole lattice above. holidays to NamibiaOne’s alarm call in the morning might be the far off wake-up calls of baboon setting about preparing to forage in the mountains or, more musically, the chorus of the larks, pipits and the other desert plains birds
The blonde grasses swaying in the breeze are in gorgeous contrast to the terracotta colours of the rooms. The property is blessed with an infinity swimming pool, perfect in which to relax.

The superb untouched wilderness of the area can be explored on game/nature drives, often tracking desert adapted elephant and rhino with occasional views of rare desert lion. Or one might hike along the Uarosib River, setting out on foot to explore the surrounding mountains whilst perhaps visiting a Himba village. A sophisticated desert experience as well as a photographer’s delight, Okahirongo is, put simply, superb.

It is now quite possible to assemble an interesting, intelligent and beautiful safari where no comfort is compromised as Namibia also has number of other simply lovely and luxurious lodges in Etosha, the Namib Desert and the Caprivi Strip!

Nautical Red Star

The modern re-inventing of an old tattoo, the red nautical star has a history of at least one hundred years. The North Star and the Southern Cross were the two sparkling dots on the sky that showed sailors their way on the sea at night; as long as one of these two sparkled on the sky, knew their directions. Sailors would therefore tattoo nautical stars on their arms for sheer superstition reasons, and to have higher chances to get home safe. Compass stars were also popular for the very same reason of staying on the right course at all times. The red nautical star is a modern recreation of this old belief or tradition.

Nautical Red Star

Soldiers choose to wear a red nautical star for a purpose similar to that of the sailors’ in the times of yore. Good decisions, luck and great fortune, bright spirits and a smooth safe life path, these are the expectations behind the tattoo. The upward direction of the nautical red star indicates a superior life vision, but personal choice makes the distinction. There are other colors for the tattoo even if black and red represent the classic; green and black, blue and black are very often used too. Without the black color included in the design, the red nautical star symbolizes just the energy of the life force.

People choose to attach all sorts of connotations to the red nautical star tattoos and often they also add a distinctive element that sets the design apart from the classical variant. There are red nautical star wearers who have a story to tell about their tattoo. For example, there are people who show solidarity with organ donors, others imagine the tattoo as a homage paid to a moment or person with a special significance in their lives, while others will choose the red nautical star because it influences optimism and vitality.

Nautical Red Star

A nautical red star can be tattooed in any salon, but have a look around the place to see whether it respects quality and safety standards. The size of the red nautical star depends on where you want to wear it. The arms, the legs and the back allow for a larger nautical star, but many people, especially women want a little discreet tattoo for embellishing purposes.

Lighting for Beginner Photographers

Basic lighting for photography really is simple if you break it down. Most new photographers try to do too much too fast. Start with ambient light before moving to strobes.

What you need to start.

  • Manual Setting on Camera
  • Silver Reflector
  • Soft Doorway Light

I would suggest trying to learn how to see light first then worry about what lighting equipment to buy. This will save you a lot of money and confusion when getting started in photography.
This is easy way to get started. Open the front or back door of your house when the sun is on the opposite side of the building. Place a chair about 1 foot inside the doorway and have your model sit down.MAke sure she is not wearing too much bright reflective jewelry. Small earrings are fine. Go outside and take a look at how the light flows in. It will light her evenly and quickly fade off on the floor 2-3 feet behind her. Now you know what soft even light looks like. Add a reflector and see the change. A simple white foam core board will reflect light and a silver color reflector will do the same but look quite a bit different hitting the model. A light gray or off white will still cast some reflection. The gray or off white may also change the color of the light which may not be as easy to see until after you take the photo. Using the white or silver will look like a light was turned on from the reflection. The others will be a lot softer and harder to see but will make a difference. Make a mental note of the look.

Next time you go on location for a photo shoot look for the same light. Find a covered area such as a bridge, doorway or large overhang and look for the same light. It will always be there if you look for it. Notice how the light enters the covered area and provides full even coverage of your model then drops off quickly allowing the background to be darker and less noticeable. Try to modify your light with every shot. A white sidewalk or building next to you will reflect light different than grass or an open field. Study the changes and use them to modify the look of the photo. It will become something you don’t need to think about. You just see slight changes in light and know what to do without much thought. Like most things it is easy after you learn how to do it. When ready to add flash start the same way. One fill light from the front then move it to the side. It will look better and you will actually see why. Later add a strobe and by the time you get to using reflectors and 3-4 strobes you will understand and see what each one is doing to the image. Start with just the bare minimum and add components only after you can see the changes each one makes. This will not only help you take much better photos it will save you a lot of money. You will know ahead of time what kind of light modifiers you really want to use to control your light before you buy them.

Another very important thing I should mention is you must have control of your camera. Make sure to shoot only in Manual mode. Any auto functions will be making changes and you will not know the difference you see are from camera settings or light control.

Practical Ways to Preserving Your Pictures

Many of our memories are best preserved in our collection of pictures. Those of us who are older remember the admonition to keep the negatives so other pictures could be printed. The younger generation doesn’t even know what a negative is! So what is the best way to preserve those digital memories?

First, with digital capabilities, don’t hesitate to take plenty of pictures. Since it doesn’t cost any more to take extra pictures, take many more than you want to keep. I purchased a large memory card for my digital camera in preparation for a special trip last summer. When I got home, it still said I could take another 10,000 pictures without running out of memory!

Once you have collected a good number of pictures, don’t be afraid to delete the ones that aren’t up to standard, or that are duplicates of others. There is no point in keeping them all. On the other hand, perhaps a certain picture isn’t the best but it preserves a moment you don’t want to forget. It only costs computer memory to keep them.

Photo albums can be set up with computer programs cataloging them by event, date, subject, or any way you want. Be sure to identify each picture clearly. I have many colored slides taken by my parents in Europe but I don’t how of what they are taken. Clear labels can minimize this frustration.

You may feel you are finished with your project. But take a second to think about the fragility of your memories. Without paper copies, they could be gone in a second! Or if you have them on floppies, you could find it impossible to view them! Floppies are also vulnerable to magnetic fields.

CDs seemed, at first, to be indestructible. Nothing touched the surface so nothing needed to wear out. But now we see that scratches or breaks are much too easy and again the memories can be lost.

Start with this suggestion: store all your pictures additionally in another place and on copies in other parts of your home. That is, if you put them on a CD, make copies and store at least one copy in another home, at work, in a safety deposit box. Back up hard drives and, if possible, do so on a network that guarantees they are in several locations around the country or world. As media changes, backup your memories on the new media. Imagine what you would now have if all your past pictures were stored on 5 ¼ floppy disks!

Today we can take and distribute, without printing, more pictures than people care to see. Just don’t forget that, with the cut in photography development cost, be sure to invest something so that you keep those precious memories for the next generation.

Hopefully these tips will help you. But if you’re more interested in a professional handling your photography, consider the services of Del Haven Studio, an accomplished Virginia Beach Portrait Photographer. View their website portfolio for samples of their quality.

Online Guitar Lessons - 3 Top Tips For Making Learning Guitar More Fun

Could there be a way to play your favorite songs on guitar fast right now? It is possible, but you need to have a plan. This is vital as most beginners jump straight into without thinking about what they want to achieve or how they plan to get there. Have a look at the 3 simple tips below that will make more enjoyable for you right from the start.

Starting the guitar can be tough. You don’t have a clue what the first thing you should learn is, your fingers are weak and struggle to hold the strings down properly or, you struggle to get any reasonable sound from your guitar because you can’t even tune it correctly.

Half the battle when you first start playing is finding a good guitar to learn on. A poorly made guitar with a very high action (the gap between the strings and the fretboard at the 12th fret) will make learning more difficult and you will spend a lot of time tuning it to keep the sound okay. The best bet is to buy a guitar with low action. Steel string guitar are more versatile for beginners and unless you only want to play lead buy an acoustic instead of an electric.

When you have finally purchased a good guitar for yourself it’s time to find a way to learn how to play it If you like being shown and told what to do the best idea is to find a good teacher in your area. If you are more independent minded try getting a quality home study course you can use in your own time.
